What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are considered superior to other tooth replacements because of their long lifespan, durability, and improved oral function – all benefits you can expect when choosing these permanent prosthetics. Versatile in their ability to address all types of tooth loss, dental implants are positioned within the jawbone and fuse over time to create a foundation for your new smile.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

There is no need to seek a referral for dental implant placement since our doctors are well-equipped to provide the start-to-finish process in our Plano office. Each case is unique, but the same four steps must be followed if successful results are to be achieved:

  • Initial Consultation – You will meet with Dr. Jayswal or Dr. Patel to go over your candidacy for treatment. If you are in good oral and overall health, and you have enough jawbone density to support your new teeth, you will be cleared right away for oral surgery.
  • Dental Implant Surgery – One of our implant dentists will anesthetize your mouth before placing each implant post into the appropriate place along your jawbone.
  • Osseointegration/Abutments – It is necessary for you to allow osseointegration to occur, which can take 3-6 months (the fusing of your implants with your jawbone), before having metal abutments (connectors) put into place.
  • Restoration Placement – You will receive your custom restoration during this final step, which will be a crown, bridge, or denture based on how many implants you received.

Benefits of Dental Implants

The benefits of dental implants cannot be overlooked. From their longer lifespan of at least 30 years to the continuous stimulation they provide to your jawbone, they are unlike any other form of tooth replacement. Since they replace more than just the visible crowns of missing teeth, they offer greater stability and long-term oral health than dentures or dental bridges. With millions of adults in the U.S. currently living with these prosthetics, it’s no surprise their benefits are what draw others to pursue treatment.

Who Dental Implants Can Help

If you are without a single tooth, multiple teeth, or an entire row, dental implants can be a suitable option for you. Although some people can move on to oral surgery right away, most patients require additional treatment to address an underlying issue (i.e., gum disease, dental decay, etc.). Fortunately, these problems do not necessarily disqualify you from receiving treatment. Instead, it may require you to wait a bit longer before dental implants can be put into place.

In the meantime, our dentists will discuss the versatility of these prosthetics and how they can transform your smile, no matter how many teeth you are missing.

Missing One Tooth

A dental bridge is not necessary when you’re only missing a single tooth. Instead, we can insert one titanium post into the vacant socket and top it with a metal abutment. Once you are fully healed, we’ll add a customized crown to complete the look, so you can begin to eat and smile with greater confidence.

Missing Multiple Teeth

There’s no need to alter healthy teeth when we can position two implant posts in the outer sockets and top them with a custom-made dental bridge. Crafted as a row of artificial teeth that attach to dental implants, this type of prosthetic successfully fills in the gaps and produces a complete, functional, and aesthetically beautiful smile.

Missing All Teeth

Traditional dentures are not the only type of prosthetic that can be used to replace an entire row of missing teeth. Instead, our dentists can use between four and six implant posts, positioning them along the jawbone, to support a custom-made denture that looks natural and offers superior bite force when eating. Not to mention, you’ll enjoy a smile that lasts longer and minimizes the risk of bone resorption.

Understanding the Cost of Dental Implants

For many individuals, cost is often the determining factor when it comes to choosing whether to move forward with treatment. When opting for dental implants over dentures or dental bridges, the price might be initially higher, but the cost-effectiveness is worth the investment in the long run. At Plexus Dental of Plano, our team is here to make sure you know how to use your dental insurance benefits and take advantage of additional savings opportunities.
